Description
Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide (Glu-Cys-Gly) that functions as the cell’s primary redox buffer. It neutralizes hydrogen peroxide, lipid peroxides, and reactive oxygen species through glutathione peroxidase enzymes; it regenerates oxidized vitamins C and E back to their active forms; and it is the critical cofactor for hepatic phase II detoxification reactions that clear drugs, hormones, and environmental toxins. Glutathione depletion accelerates with age, and levels in lymphocytes have been proposed as a biomarker of oxidative aging.
In women, glutathione has additional hormonal relevance: it plays a role in the metabolism and clearance of excess estrogen metabolites (particularly through glutathione S-transferase), making it relevant for estrogen-dominant conditions. Glutathione also supports melanin regulation — IV glutathione is used for its well-documented effect on skin luminosity through inhibition of tyrosinase, the enzyme that drives melanin synthesis. For women with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, or uneven tone, this is a mechanistically supported intervention.
Female-calibrated dosing: 600–1200mg IV push 1–3x per week for skin and antioxidant protocols; 300–600mg subcutaneously 3–5x/week for ongoing detoxification support. Administer slowly — IV push should take 10–15 minutes minimum to avoid sulfur taste and flushing.
Storage: Store lyophilized powder below -20°C. After reconstitution, refrigerate at 2–8°C and use within 14 days. Glutathione is highly sensitive to oxidation — minimize air exposure.
