Selank (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) is a heptapeptide developed by the Russian Institute of Molecular Genetics. It modulates GABA-A receptor function (specifically α-subunit expression) without acting as a direct agonist — meaning it reduces anxiety through the GABA system without the sedative, amnestic, or dependence-forming effects of benzodiazepines. It also upregulates BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) expression, enhances enkephalin degradation (increasing endogenous opioid tone), and has demonstrated immunomodulatory effects through its tuftsin-like core sequence.
