Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is a 28-amino acid peptide expressed throughout the nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, immune cells, and lungs. At the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) — the brain’s circadian master clock — VIP synchronizes the oscillating neurons that govern sleep-wake cycles, hormonal timing, and metabolic rhythms. It is also a potent anti-inflammatory neuropeptide: VIP inhibits TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-12 production while upregulating anti-inflammatory cytokines, making it an endogenous neuroimmune modulator.
For women, VIP has multiple entry points of relevance.
